Occoneechee State Park

Christmas in May!  Dacey's Christmas gift to me was a trip to Occoneechee State Park.  It's only about a 2-hour drive from Richmond, which is a good thing since we didn't manage to get on the road until around 6 pm on Friday.

I guess it shouldn't surprise me that many of the Virginia State Parks cabins have the same floorplan, but still, it wigged me out a bit to walk into the cabin and find it EXACTLY THE SAME as a cabin we'd stayed at in another park a few years ago.  I remembered recording music there; in fact some of the song samples you'll find on our website were recorded in that other cabin, only at the moment I can't remember in which park that other cabin was located.  But I digress.

The weekend was all about R & R.  We had great weather and enjoyed hiking part of the Panhandle trail and the entirety of the Beaver Dam trail.  The spring birding was FANTASTIC, and for you bird nerds out there here's my list of birds seen and/or heard on the trails (but I'm sure I'm forgetting some):

Prothonotary Warbler (tracked down to water's edge for a good view), Black and White Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler (pretty nice closeup), Northern Parula, Pine Warbler, Prairie Warbler, Ovenbird (singing their little heads off EVERYWHERE), Red-eyed Vireo, White-eyed Vireo, Yellow-throated Vireo, Carolina Wren, Blue-grey Gnatcatcher, Gray Catbird, Mourning Dove, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Wood Thrush, Eastern Towhee, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chickadee, Northern Cardinal, Eastern Wood-pewee, Acadian Flycatcher, Great-crested Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbird, Eastern Bluebird, American Goldfinch, Summer Tanager (both male and female seen), Scarlet Tanager (AWESOME closeup view of male), Chipping Sparrow, American Crow, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Great Blue Heron.

On Saturday afternoon, we went into Clarksville, the nearest town, to see what was going on in "civilization".  There happened to be an antique car show going on.

We had a late-afternoon glass of wine on the patio at Cooper's Landing.  We also went back there for brunch on Sunday morning.

Back at the cabin that Saturday evening, we got a little recording done.

Another weekend that went by far too quickly.
